about

There is a line that connects distinct fields, distinct spaces, the line that is the starting point of Silvia Mecozzi’s work. It is born on paper and through engraving transcends two-dimensional surfaces on which it is inscribed and heads out to space – an investigative trajectory to be experienced, a trajectory of self-discovery that stimulates relations between the work and its spectators.

In Olódòdó (which means scarlet flower in the iorubá language) we get a glimpse at a transversal dialogue between art and science, both which mutually contaminate and transform each other. This exchange allows for the articulation of different modes of looking, experiences, reflections, raises questions related to the individual, the work and its surroundings.

Thusly, Silvia Mecozzi departs from the genesis, the beginning – the point, and its repetition; the line – tracing trajectories that beckon one to interact with her work. Latent sensuality, resulting from the organic-like quality of her forms in counterpoint to the apparent coldness of the material used in her three-dimensional pieces, allows us to not only extrapolate our condition as passive bystanders, but question the very condition of the work itself and its relation with the human body.

The installation presented here – the artist’s first experience with video – raises the potential of and gives form to these issues. Pure movement in silent and slow transformation. The line here is transformed into a path that emanates the delicate potency latent in things to be, that which pulsates, still in gestation, but on the verge of exploding.

Angélica de Morares, when writing about the artist’s exhibition at the São Paulo State Pinacoteca, compares Silvia Mecozzi’s work with the game of love, as it gives rise to seductive flirtations, the attraction between bodies, between spectators and her work, unveiling channels of desire. Let us then accept her invitation and penetrate into this scarlet organic world which is Olódòdó. Here, where things touch...
